9 GEORGIANVIEW FALL 2023 PREMIER'S AWARDS COMMUNITY SERVICE Chief Donna Big Canoe Native Education – Community and Social Development (class of 2015 and 1998) First elected Chief of Georgina Island First Nation in 2007 at the age of 31, Chief Big Canoe has served as a collaborative leader. Under her leadership, the community enjoys improved drinking water, health services and employment opportunities. She says she acquired key communication skills at Georgian in the Native Education and Social Development programs. Chief Big Canoe has been honoured with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal and Georgian's Board of Governors' Distinguished Alumni Award. RECENT GRAD Wazeer Rahman | Police Foundations (class of 2018) Wazeer is an ardent believer in the value of community policing to proactively engage to build trust and reduce negative interactions. He credits his faculty in the Police Foundations program with preparing him for his career. Wazeer spends many volunteer hours mentoring other potential policing students. As an international student, he co-founded the Kerala Muslim Student Association, which today has chapters across Canada. In 2021, he received a Community Champion Award from the Simcoe County Newcomer Recognition Awards. APPRENTICESHIP Ian Holmes | Carpenter Apprentice – Advanced (class of 2010) Ian has built high-end homes for almost 20 years, creating dream properties on the shores of Georgian Bay and Muskoka. As general superintendent at Tamarack North, Ian is an integral part of the leadership team. Ian is committed to a diverse workforce and credits his apprenticeship training in Georgian's Carpenter Apprentice – Advanced program with contributing to his success.
