17 GEORGIANVIEW FALL 2023
Rachel Curran (Staron) (class of 2017 and 2019) is one of
Georgian's newest members of the Alumni Association
Executive Council. She found her groove during a co-op
work placement at an event planning company while
attending Georgian's Travel and Tourism program.
"That's when I realized I actually like the event side of
hospitality more than travel and tourism," said Rachel.
"That inspired me to go back to school to take the Event
Management program."
After her 2019 graduation Rachel returned to event
planning. But like many others, she experienced a
career disruption because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Suddenly there were no events to organize so she went
back to retail where she developed management skills
while still doing some events. A year ago, she moved to
the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada's GTA office to
become a co-ordinator for community fundraising.
"I searched for a bit, I did many different things,"
she recalled, "but the end goal was always to work
for a nonprofit."During her free time, Rachel coaches
basketball for the Special Olympics Barrie team. And

The story behind the number: Rachel is one of
four family members who have attended Georgian.
every November for the past seven years, she's helped
pack shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.
Earlier this year, she joined the Georgian College Alumni
Association Executive Council (AAEC) so she could
reconnect with the college and give back.
You could say, she has a good concept of the alumni
perspective. Rachel is one of four family members who
attended Georgian.
Her older sister, Heather Webb (class of 2017),
graduated from the Dental Hygiene program and now
works as a hygienist. Her brother, Alexander Staron
(class of 2022) graduated from Visual and Digital Media
Arts. And, Zachary Staron will graduate from the Sport
Administration program next April.
"I've kept solid friendships," Rachel says about her
Georgian experience, adding those connections
continue to develop as she meets other Georgian grads
in her career and personal life.
