Self-determination: The shelter
Self-determination ensures Indigenous people are the primary decision-makers of their own futures, including in
postsecondary education. According to the UNDRIP, "Indigenous peoples have the right to self-determination. By virtue
of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development."
As per this definition, the postsecondary education system plays a key role in supporting self-determination at the
community level.
Relationships: The foundation
Relationships are the foundation that holds up each pillar and provides support for the arbour, emphasizing the significance
of authentic and meaningful relationships between Indigenous peoples and communities, and the college community.
Relationships ensure the combining of strengths and the maintaining of sustainable actions to "share the load" of
responsibility for decolonization, reconciliation, and Indigenization.
Indigenous student success: The central pole
The floor, roof and all pillars are connected to the central pole which, in this case, signifies student success. Student success
is the primary goal of this strategy. The success of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students should be measured by both their
academic and personal growth experiences while at Georgian, from recruitment to graduation and beyond. The students
bloom from the arbour as florals, representing the good medicine they bring out to the world.
