43 GEORGIANVIEW SPRING 2022 AThLETICS AThLETICS 2020-21 Athletic Department Despite COVID-19 restrictions preventing indoor facility use during the 2020-21 academic year, and staff being redeployed to other areas, the athletic department was able to keep Georgian students engaged and active with online programming. • Online movement and well-being workshops were offered to students enrolled in synchronous learning. • Workshops provided information regarding Canada's 24-hour movement guidelines. • Delivered by Kahoot, an online learning platform, sessions explored how movement guidelines can be incorporated into daily life. • Kahoot provided information about services available through Georgian Athletics to support a healthy lifestyle. • Students were shown by a fitness assistant on the screen how to activate their fitness memberships to stream classes and access the on-demand fitness library. • Students also took part in several e-sports tournaments facilitated by Georgian's CyberGrizzlies e-sports club. • Established in 2018, CyberGrizzlies is the largest student-run club with approximately 900 members who meet online to play video games casually or competitively. As the manager of Co-operative Education and Career Success at Georgian, John's philosophy is the same for students in co-op as it is for athletes on the rugby pitch. "We want them to be better young people when they leave our program," he says. "We focus on honesty and accountability, which builds resilience." John's winning approach has been widely celebrated by the rugby community. In 2016, he was the first person to simultaneously win coach of the year at every level: college, provincial, and national. The OCAA honoured him with that same award once more in 2019. He's also been recognized as the west division coach of the year five times. "My name is on those awards, but it wouldn't have happened without the support and involvement of the incredible people around me," he says. "The college has been amazingly supportive. We have the best facility in the province and the best athletic therapist. Then there are the players and the coaches who work tirelessly for the love of the game. All of these pieces come together to create success."
