41 GEORGIANVIEW SPRING 2022 SChOLARShIP SPOTLIGhT When alumnus Elliott Lade (class of 2021) came to Georgian College, he had a Bachelor of Science - in Nanotechnology from the University of Guelph and a desire to fast-track Georgian's three-year Electrical Engineering Technology program into two years. "I was really adamant to be done in two years so I could start working sooner," he explains. It was an ambitious goal, but he was able to transfer some credits over from his university program and complete a couple of independent studies for courses that weren't normally offered in the first two years of the program. The Toronto Hydro Leadership Award he received helped to cover the immediate costs associated with fast-tracking his program, as well as some living costs so he could focus on his studies. The award would come to mean even more to Elliott because after doing an eight-month co-op with Toronto Hydro, he was eager to work there after graduation. "I really wanted to be in power distribution or generation and I really had a great experience there," he says. "The co-op term was wonderful. Any new students coming into the electrical programs at Georgian should take advantage of these opportunities. Honestly, that was such a foot in the door and into the industry. Getting to meet the team through my co-op and understanding how the city goes about doing their work was a great experience." Elliott was hired by Toronto Hydro at the end of November 2021 and currently works as an Electrical Engineering Technologist Level 1 (ETL1) working with customers to help implement their electrical projects from start to finish. He sees a rewarding future with the utility. "Toronto Hydro has different progressions within my current position, and you progress based on your evaluations," he explains. "My goal is to make those jumps and then I can become an ETL2. To do that, I need to get my Certified Engineering Technologist designation. I'd like to write that exam and be affiliated with them and grow within Toronto Hydro that way." Since 2012, Toronto Hydro and Georgian have formed a collaborative partnership to create and maximize student opportunities in the electrical utilities sector, and expand opportunities around corporate training, research, and employee engagement. This past year, Toronto Hydro launched a new suite of student awards at Georgian aimed at supporting diversity in students pursuing electrical engineering studies.
