Amanda did so well that after graduation, she received
exemptions when taking the Transport Canada exams,
needing only to take a few exams before her oral exam
to receive a Watchkeeping Mate licence in 2009 – an
unrestricted licence that allows her to work on any
ship, as long as it is accepting Canadian officers.
In 2017 she got her Captain's licence, which allows her to
operate any vessel up to 150 gross tonnes in Canadian
waters and up to 500 gross tonnes in Canadian sheltered
waters. She credits the training she received in the Marine
Technology – Navigation program for her success.
"I've always felt like it was definitely an accomplishment
to even be accepted into the program, let alone complete
it and be able to put it on my resumé," she says.
Many things have changed at the Owen Sound Campus
since Amanda was a student, specifically the creation of
the Algoma Central Corporation Marine Emergency Duties
Centre and the addition of more advanced ship simulators,
but there is still the same close-knit feel she loved.
• Renovations have started for the new Chemistry/Science lab and the new Bring your own Device
(BYOD) lab.
• Renovations will soon be underway to create a Nursing and Wellness Wing to support Georgian's
new Honours Bachelor of Science – Nursing degree program.
• The Automotive Apprenticeship program features cars donated by Honda and Ford. Talks are
underway with other partners.

Amanda Gibson's initial trip as a first mate, was helping to commandeer
a 26.24-meter Catamaran into Horseshoe Falls, as 750,000 gallons of
water gushed over every second.
"It's awe-inspiring to be a passenger but
it is phenomenal to have that (amount
of water) above you and know you're
supposed to tame it to your will."
