On Jan. 8, 2020, the world was shaken when a Ukrainian airliner crashed near
Tehran, Iran, killing 176 passengers, including 57 Canadians, several of whom
studied or taught at postsecondary institutions in Ontario. As a college
community, Georgian mourned this tragic event with the entire sector.
Shortly after the tragedy occurred, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced the
creation of a scholarship fund to honour the victims of the fatal plane crash. The
fund included scholarships of $10,000 to 57 students, one in memory of each
Canadian victim. Georgian College, which educates students from more than
85 countries every year, was granted one of these scholarships, which the college
awarded to Jennifer Webber – a talented and deserving student in Georgian's
Honours Bachelor of Science - Nursing (BScN) collaborative program, and graduate
of the college's Pre-health Science Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees certificate
program.
Her original goal was to work in the audiology field since both she and her son have hearing loss, however after
attending Georgian, she decided to stay and gain her BScN degree. "I was shocked and couldn't believe it, then the
tears started to flow," she says. "Receiving this scholarship means I can focus on my school work and not worry if I'll be
able to move on to the next semester. Being chosen shows me that I'm on the right path and has encouraged me to
keep pushing, even harder now." she says.
