Indigenous Resources

When Erika Ewald was a
new student at Georgian, the
Indigenous Resource Centre
quickly became her home
away from home.
It offered a quiet place to work
and connect with other Indigenous
students, counsellors and visiting
elders. These centres at Georgian
offer cultural support, as well as
a wide range of resources.
Now a NiwiJiagen (peer mentor),
Erika sits on the planning
committee for the annual Pow
Wow, and helps organize feasts and
pot lucks, craft nights, traditional
drumming and Anishinaabemowin
help for language students. She
is also there to offer support and
ensure students feel welcome at
the centre.
I used many of the services that are offered
through the Indigenous Centre. When I graduated
from my last program and needed assistance
deciding what to do next, I reached out to the
community liaison. They offered assistance on
programs that might be of interest and helped
me make my final decision.

Being part of GCSA has
enabled me to grow and
explore opportunities.
Dhruv Patel | graduate of Mechanical Engineering Technology
and current Human Resources Management student
Dhruv Patel has always loved
to engage with people, so
when he came to Georgian,
he took part in as many
activities as he could.
Orientation, Get Connected,
movie nights, and other fun
events organized by the
Georgian College Students'
Association (GCSA), brought
him together with other
students and opened doors
for networking. He also found
opportunities to join clubs
and athletic teams.
Dhruv is the current GCSA
president and truly believes in
the benefits of getting involved.
"Getting involved with campus
life improves the student life to
a great extent," he says. "Our
personal interests are tapped,
a portfolio of experience
develops, fun leads to good
feelings, social connections
grow, awareness of diversity
expands and self-esteem grows.
Being involved in the campus
community is vital to every
student and it's vital to the
college, too. It's a symbiotic
relationship that serves
everyone well."
