MEN AND WOMEN'S TRADITIONAL
The style of Men's Traditional has been carried on
by men throughout the ages. Each Nation has its
own unique version. Men's Traditional dancers often
spend years assembling their regalia, collecting
different pieces throughout their life. Their regalia
will often include sacred items and other items of
personal importance. The steps and movements tell
the story of a warrior preparing himself for battle
as well as the story of the exploits of battle and
hunting expeditions. Women's Traditional dance
takes its essence from the women's traditional roles
of being the caregivers and nurturers of the family
and the backbone of the community. Women's
Traditional dancers portray an aura of elegance,
dignity and grace at a Pow Wow, and are looked
upon with great respect. A particular feature of
the Women's Traditional dance is that the feet
are always kept close to the ground and one foot
is always in contact with the earth to refl ect all
women's connection to Mother Earth. The steady
fl ow of the movement of life upon the back of the
earth is also represented in the slow, rhythmic steps,
which make the fringes of their shawls sway as they
walk. Another feature of the dance is its bouncing
movements. Sometimes using sidesteps to circle the
arena. Women's Traditional dancers demonstrate
strength and poise.
