9 GeorgianCollege.ca Pow Wow terminology Grand Entry This is the entry to the dance arena, which opens each Pow Wow. The Eagle Staffs are carried first into the circle, followed by the other nation flags. The head dancers and invited dignitaries are next in order. The men's dancers follow next, and then the women's dancers, then the junior girls, with the little boys and girls last. After the Grand Entry, there is a Flag Song and then a prayer by an Elder. The Eagle Staffs and the flags are then placed by the arena. Arena The area inside of the Pow Wow circle where the participants dance in a circular pattern. In the Anishinabek culture, the dancers go in a clockwise pattern. Inter-tribal Song A general term referring to an open Pow Wow dance or song that can be joined by anyone, including spectators. You will see dancers in street clothing participating. Everyone is welcome – give it a try! Exhibition Song This is a time to watch the dancers at their best. This time gives them the opportunity to show their chosen style of dance. Regalia The dance outfits worn in the circle during the Pow Wow are called regalia. Regalia is very personal and an artistic expression of the dancers' lives, feelings, interests, family and spiritual quest. POW WOW ETIQUETTE Please listen to the emcee. This person will announce the different songs and will also let visitors know when it is appropriate to join in. The emcee will also give out other information and news. Please respect and honour Veterans and Flag Songs. If you are able, be sure to stand until these songs are finished. Remove all hats or head coverings unless they are adorned with an eagle's feather. If you would like to photograph a drum, singer or dancer outside of the dance arena, please ask them first. If you wish to use the photo for publication, ask permission. A dancer's clothing is called a "regalia," not a costume. Please do not touch a dancer's regalia without permission. It is often made up of sacred objects and family heirlooms. If something falls off a dancer's regalia, please do not pick it up; instead, inform a Pow Wow volunteer.
