POW WOW 2020 8 A brief history of the origin of the Pow Wow Throughout Turtle Island, the heartbeat of Mother Earth can be heard calling people to celebrate. Across North America, men, women and children gather to celebrate new friends and greet old ones in a tradition commonly known as Pow Wow. Some Nations believe that the Pow Wow originates from the Alkonquin word Pauwow meaning "Medicine or Wise Man." According to legend, a man named Pauwow had a daughter who fell ill. When no medicines would work Pauwow turned to the Creator for guidance. In a vision, he was told to gather the people to sing and dance to call the spirit of his daughter back. When the young girl recovered, Pauwow hosted a big celebration calling together people from all nations to celebrate with him. The Pow Wow is a time of singing, dancing, sharing, healing and laughter. This is an opportunity for us to remember our seven generations from the past and for our future seven generations of a proud heritage to share with others.
