In 2014, Grey County Council committed $2 million, followed by provincial and federal government investment and private industry support resulting in the 2016 opening of the Algoma Central Corporation Marine Emergency Duties (MED) Centre at the Owen Sound Campus. The centre is named for Algoma Central Corporation, which became the largest private donor to the project with a $1-million donation. The common area of the 13,600-square-foot facility is named in recognition of Lower Lakes Towing Ltd., which made a generous contribution of $500,000 to the project. The building, with an adjacent fire training facility includes classrooms, videoconferencing facilities, a lifeboat simulator, and other support facilities. The fire training facility, simulates on-ship fire emergency environments generating flames and smoke. Life raft, lifeboat and immersion suit training are offered at a nearby pool and harbour facilities in Owen Sound. The new centre has provided a boost to the local economy. In the 2018-19 season, out-of-town participants accounted for approximately 90 per cent of the training carried out at the MED Centre.
