"The opportunity for learning continues to draw people to the Peter B. Moore Changemaker Space at Georgian's Barrie Campus," says Virginia Barlow, one of the technicians that oversees the space as part of a co-op placement. Virginia is a three-time Georgian graduate and is currently pursuing her fourth Georgian diploma in computer programming. As a technician, Virginia organizes and hosts Maker Nights in the space, including a recent event where attendees incorporated electronics into fabric. Her project involved adding capacitive touch controls to fabric, with the goal of building a controller for devices that doesn't require the pushing of buttons – something that can be painful for her. Virginia suffers from fibromyalgia, a nerve disorder which causes chronic pain and fatigue and has no known cure. "You wake up feeling like you ran a marathon the day before, but you've got to get up and do stuff," she says. "I would like to do something that would help not just myself, but other people as well." Virginia credits her love of learning as a catalyst for the passion and enthusiasm she brings to the Changemaker Space. "I like to interact and work with the students. Being a technician is a great job," she says. "I help to make their ideas better. Let's make it awesome!"
