GEORGIAN ALUMNA SAILING STRONG Amanda Slade "I'm not inclined to let you in." These are the words that no student wants to hear, but exactly what Georgian alumna Amanda Slade received in 1981 when she first tried to enrol in the Marine Navigation Technology program (now known as Marine Technology – Navigation) at the college's Owen Sound campus. Amanda was already an experienced cadet, having worked for Toronto Brigantine, an educational tall ship sailing program for several summers. However, her good grades and experience were not enough at a time when very few women pursued a career in the marine industry, and even fewer stayed with it. "I can still to this day remember how angry I was," says Amanda. Nevertheless, she persisted and was admitted into the program.
