Adam Dixon Electrical Engineering, 2011 Canadian Men's Sledge Hockey Team hockey until the age of 10, when he received a diagnosis that would change his life. Adam had Ewing's sarcoma. The cancer necessitated the removal of his right tibia, a procedure that required a replacement donor bone. "Being a 10-year-old kid, it was tough not being able to play hockey anymore," says Adam. "I was pretty lucky that I found sledge hockey. A family friend suggested I try it, and it took off from there." He recalls watching fellow Georgian alumnus Graeme Murray play in the 2006 winter games, an experience which led to Adam trying out for the national team. Both Adam and his teamate Brad credit Georgian with putting them on a path to future success. Brad saw education as a chance to define himself off the ice. "I'm proud to be a Georgian graduate," he says, adding that pursuing his education "was about becoming something more than just a hockey player." He remembers submitting school assignments in the middle of the night at an internet café in Norway. "Hockey was tough and it could have been a roadblock for me to attend college, but Georgian welcomed me with open arms." Today, Brad is working with All Sports All People, a non-profit organization that delivers inclusive sport programming to communities throughout Simcoe County, which provides equipment and support for sledge hockey, hand cycling and wheelchair basketball workshops. Adam works at Alectra Utiilities as a journeyperson meter technician, and both he and Brad have coaching roles with the Elmvale Bears sledge hockey team – the place where Adam first discovered his love of sledge hockey. 15 GEORGIANVIEW 2018 COLLEGE CHANGEMAKERS
